ACT English for Math and Science People
How to Ace SAT Writing/ACT English for Math and Science People SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Are you a math or science person who feels intimidated by SAT Writing or ACT English? Do you think that your natural abilities will prevent you from doing well on the Writing and English sections? This article should alleviate your concerns. I'll let you know how you can excel on Writing or English even if you're more skilled in math and science. Furthermore, I'll provide you with important tips and strategies that will enable your success. Why You Shouldnââ¬â¢t Worry If you're worried that you can't excel on the SAT Writing/ACT English section if you're not a published novelist with superlative reading comprehension and writing skills, let me ease your fears. With the right studying and ample practice, you can do well even if you're not a naturally gifted writer. Maybe you're worried that you won't be able able to understand the passages well enough. Not a problem. Even though the questions come from longer passages, most of the questions pertain to specific sentences or paragraphs. None of the questions require more than a superficial understanding of the passage. Perhaps you're concerned because you have a limited vocabulary, and you're not familiar with the big fancy words that have become associated with the SAT. Don't fret. Most of the vocabulary isnââ¬â¢t extremely complicated or abstruse (an old SAT world). The SAT has done away with very difficult vocabulary words. Do you feel like you struggle with grammar? Do you have no idea when to use a comma? Are you clueless about the difference between "there" and "their?" You can overcome these obstacles. The grammar questions are based on rules that can be learned fairly quickly. You donââ¬â¢t need to have a strong intuitive grasp of English and writing to correctly answer most of the grammar questions. Are you scared of the organization or transition questions that test your knowledge of writing style? The majority of the writing style questions can be correctly answered by using logic and employing basic strategies. 3 Awesome Strategies for Success I recommend using these strategies to do well on SAT Writing/ACT English as a math/science person. #1: Rely on Grammar Rules Instead of What Sounds Right For all grammar questions, try to identify the rule that's being tested. Keep in mind that some questions will test multiple rules. Keep in mind that some questions will test multiple rules. If thereââ¬â¢s a grammar error, select the answer choice that corrects the error without creating any additional errors. Often, the SAT and ACT provide answer choices that sound right to many people, but they contain subtle grammar errors. By relying on your knowledge of grammar rules, youââ¬â¢re less likely to overlook errors and make careless mistakes. ACT Example Here's a question taken from an actual ACT. If youââ¬â¢re not familiar with the grammar rules for the ACT, this sentence may sound fine to you. You may not detect any obvious grammar error and select A. However, if you study ACT grammar rules, youââ¬â¢ll know that the shortest answer that doesnââ¬â¢t contain a grammatical error and conveys the same information as the original sentence will be the right answer. Also, youââ¬â¢ll know that the word ââ¬Å"beingâ⬠often indicates a wordiness error. The correct answer is C. SAT Example You'll see the importance of following grammar rules on this question from an official practice SAT. If you rely on what sounds right, you may miss the grammar errors in this sentence. Whenever you see a verb underlined, you need to ensure that the verb agrees with its subject and that the correct form of the verb is being used. Also, whenever a pronoun is underlined, you need to check to see that the pronoun has a clear antecedent and that the correct form of the pronoun is being used. In this sentence, the singular verb ââ¬Å"wasâ⬠corresponds with the plural subject ââ¬Å"Harvey Houses,â⬠and the singular pronoun ââ¬Å"itsâ⬠refers to the Harvey Houses, too. Both the verb and the pronoun should be plural. The correct answer is B. #2: Use A Systematic Approach for Reading the Passages Before taking the SAT/ACT, you should have a tested approach for reading SAT Writing/ACT English passages. There are multiple approaches you can take to reading the passages: sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph, answer as you go, or passage first. Read the article on how to approach ACT English passages or how to approach SAT Writing passages for more information explaining the various approaches and how to decide which one will work for you. Once you settle on the approach that works best for you, youââ¬â¢ll be able to maximize your efficiency and make the best use of your time. #3: Review Examples of Questions Related to Each Grammar Rule and Type of Writing Style Question The SAT and ACT use the same types of questions on each test. Reviewing each type of question will increase your familiarity and understanding of all of the different questions. Youââ¬â¢ll be more comfortable with the content on the SAT/ACT. Create a study guide of questions from real ACTs/official practice SATs. Check out our articles in SAT Writing and ACT English to learn about all the different types of questions and for examples of each question type. Key Topics to Study If youââ¬â¢re not a reader or extremely proficient with English, you may struggle with questions that donââ¬â¢t conform to specific rules, like word choice and idiom questions. However, there are a number of topics you can study that are relatively straightforward and conform to rules that you should be able to understand. For a breakdown of the grammar rules you should know, check out my articles on the most important grammar rules for the SAT and ACT. Here are some of the most often tested topics that, even as a science/math person, you should be able to master with a little practice. Iââ¬â¢ve linked to the related articles which thoroughly explain the rules you need to know and provide example questions. Punctuation SAT Writing and ACT English both emphasize punctuation rules. You need to know when and how to use commas, semicolons, colons, apostrophes, and dashes. While you may have no idea how to use punctuation right now, the punctuation rules tested on the SAT and ACT arenââ¬â¢t overly complex. Read our articles on punctuation, possessives, and commas. We break down all the rules and provide example questions. Transitions Transitions are more heavily emphasized on the SAT, but they're tested on both SAT Writing and ACT English. You need to know which transition word to use in a given sentence, and you need to be able to select the sentence that will most logically connect ideas in a passage. While transition questions can seem difficult to students who arenââ¬â¢t strong in English, there are some rules you can learn to simplify transition questions. Make sure to review our transition articles. Transition questions rely on logic, and I assume thatââ¬â¢s a strength for all the math and science people. Wordiness and Redundancy As I mentioned previously, the basic wordiness rule is that a sentence should be grammatically correct and concise. The shortest grammatically correct sentence that conveys that same information as the original sentence will be the correct answer. On both the SAT and ACT, all else being equal, shorter is better. Review our wordiness and redundancy articles for example and practice questions. Verb Forms Verb tenses and forms are tested on both the SAT and ACT, but verb questions are more common on the ACT. If you know how different tenses are used and keep verb tenses consistent, you should be able to correctly answer the verb questions you encounter. Organization/Macro-Logic Both the SAT and the ACT test you on how to organize a passage. Macro-logic refers to knowing where sentences and paragraphs should go in a passage. Youââ¬â¢ll be a asked where a sentence should be placed in a paragraph, and youââ¬â¢ll be asked where a paragraph should be placed in a passage. Basically, you need to remember that each sentence should logically connect to the sentence that follows, and each paragraph should logically transition to the next one. Owen Moore/Flickr Key Tips to Help You Correctly Answer SAT Writing/ACT English Questions Here are some important tips that will help you eliminate wrong answer choices and improve your score. Read the Whole Sentence This tip is extremely important for the SAT Writing and ACT English section. Most questions will ask you how to change the underlined portion of a sentence. Donââ¬â¢t just read the underlined portion. You need to read the entire sentence. For some questions, like transition questions and verb tense questions, you often need to read the surrounding sentences as well. If Two Answer Choices Are Functionally the Same, Both Are Wrong If two errors are functionally identical, both must be wrong. You may see this on redundancy, punctuation, or transition questions. Hereââ¬â¢s a transition question from SAT Writing to illustrate this point. This is a transition question. You need to read both sentences to determine the relationship between them and select the correct transition to use. In looking at the answer choices, C and D are functionally identical. They can be used interchangeably; therefore, both answer choices must be wrong. Now, you only have to choose between A and B. Because the second sentence is illustrating the opinion expressed in the first sentence, the correct answer is A. ââ¬Å"Howeverâ⬠is used to indicate contrast. Donââ¬â¢t Fear No Change Some students think the NO CHANGE option canââ¬â¢t be right, but sometimes NO CHANGE will be the correct answer. In fact, on ACT English, NO CHANGE tends to be more common than expected if all the answer choices were distributed evenly. If a sentence doesnââ¬â¢t seem to contain an error, look at the differences between the answer choices to determine what concept is being tested. Then, look at the original sentence to ensure that there is no error pertaining to that concept or rule. Review: Key Takeaways To sum up the important points I've previously mentioned, here are the most essential things to remember on your quest to get a wonderful SAT Writing/ACT English score You Can Do It! This is the most important thing to remember. Even if you're a math/science person, you're capable of doing exceptionally well on the SAT Writing/ACT English section if you're diligent in your preparation. Grammar Can Be Your Friend There's no reason to think you have to be a professional grammarian to get a top score. While some of the grammar questions can be challenging, most of them apply to rules that can be learned fairly quickly with proper studying and practice. Targeted Practice Will Lead You to Your Target Score If you study and understand each type of question from real ACTS and the official practice SATs, you'll do well on test day. Again, make sure you're familiar with all the differenct concepts that are tested on SAT Writing/ACT English, and know the proper steps to take to correctly answer each type of question. Global Warming Regulations Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4500 words
Global Warming Regulations - Essay Example Industrial revolution has given birth to different human activities that are involved in burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas for the purpose of obtaining energy. Carbon is an important ingredient of the fuels that are burnt for getting energy (Richard C. Rockwell, 1998). This burning is the primary source of emission of different green gases like carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and ozone (O3). The emission of these different gases is closely related with the pollution released in to the atmosphere. In this process some other gases like Carbon monoxide; nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide are also produced as result of incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons in fuels of automobiles (Sandra L. Justus, 1998). This type of auto emission generates carbon monoxide which is a big challenge for the global warming (Steven J. Moss and Richard J. McCann, 1993). At present motor vehicles produce about 60 percent of the nationwide total carbon monoxide (E NS News, 2003) and in some cities it is as high as 95 percent. This colorless, odorless but deadly harmful gas is also produced by the industrial processes, non transportation fuel use and wildfires (Sandra L. Justus, 1998). In order to curb the global warming, the US government has attempt... These regulations are directly affecting the functions and business of Emission Trading markets. The current discussion about the government regulations on carbon monoxide emission will focus on the negatives effects of carbon monoxide that are main cause of these regulations and the impact of these regulations on the Emission trading markets. Moreover we will trace the negative and positive effects of previous regulations so that we can have a clear picture in front of us that can help in predicting the effects and outcomes of the current regulations. Reasons behind the Regulations US Government has enacted the regulation on the emission of carbon monoxide. This decision is effected by several factors. Among them the poisonous effects of carbon monoxide on human health are very important. The other reasons include the safety from air pollution, political pressure etc. Carbon monoxide and Human Health The negative impact of carbon monoxide on the public health is an important reason behind that. Carbon monoxide is the most toxic substance that people come in contact in their daily lives. When carbon monoxide is produced in large amount it remains present around the people at different places. It has some negative impacts on the human health and it can affect the people at their work places, homes, garage, cars, caravan and boat (IAPA, 2006). When people inhale carbon monoxide, it passes through the respiratory system and goes to the lungs from where it passes directly in to the bloodstreams through the air sacs. Carbon monoxide affects the functions of blood and stop oxygen to reach the body tissues and insufficient

Air cargo pkomot
The Boeing Company is one of the best companies providing a comprehensive and resent overview of the air cargo industry. It provides the biennial World Air Forecast. The findings summarise the major air trade markets in the world, giving the major trends and projects on the future improvements and performance of the worldââ¬â¢s cargo airplane.Forecasting and planning are two synonyms which normally create confusion yet they have different meanings. Forecasting is the task of predicting the short term or long term future events by keeping statistics. The important element in forecasting is that itââ¬â¢s based upon some assumptions which are general. These assumptions may or may not be true and does not necessarily reflect the companyââ¬â¢s expectations.Planning on the other hand is the creation and maintenance of a flow of events in an organisation and the process of coming up with the procedures necessary to create the desired goal in the organisation.Forecasting is a very im portant aspect in cargo industry. Some of the purposes of forecasting include:à ·Ã à à à à à à à To identify the alternative possible futures.à ·Ã à à à à à à à To get a justification on the plans and decisions we make.à ·Ã à à à à à à à To provide information on possible futures so that realistic planning can occur.à ·Ã à à à à à à à To raise awareness of the possible futures so that we have choice over which the future will support. These are just a few of the purposes of planning but overally its meant to give us a direction on the future happenings so that we get prepared.Forecasting can either be short term or long term. Short term forecast includes any current or recent past records that form a basis for the forecast. An example is the use of precipitation, thunderstorms and winds.Long term forecasting is the use of a wide range of facilities for forecasting especially that which covers a long period of tim e e.g. the use of cloud computing. This is the use of the softwareââ¬â¢s to compute the forecasts of a particular company. The use of forecasting in the companies involved in air cargo has increased over the years. One of the major contributions of forecasting is in planning.Air cargo companies have had to have an efficient plan making them set aside resources to tackle the future outcomes of the company. It has also aided in analysis. Several companies can compare themselves and know there stand. This has tremendously caused improvements in the air cargo industry. The accuracy of forecasting in the modern world necessitates the controlling process. The forecast error is currently estimated to be very small and is calculated by getting the difference between the actual value and the forecast value. The air cargo companies were affected by the traffic growth in 2008 and 2009 edition. World air cargo went upto 6% in 2007, following the previous 4% in 2006. This has declined in the yea rs 2008 and 2009 consecutively approximated to be about 3.4% in 2008. This analysis relates to the Boeing air cargo company.2009 will however be a grim year for the air cargo industry because of the magnitude at which the occurrence of global slump in trade growth is doing. Seabury forecasts indicate that 2009 will be a tough year for the air cargo companies getting 3.1% in air trade. It predicts however that this will improve in 2010 and rise to 5.1% forming a basis for further improvement in the subsequent years.Growth projections and highlights indicate the air cargo company picking up to 5.1% to 5.9% from the year 2011 to 2012. These projections are based on the fact that the change of the food and fuel prices will have a major change in the future. These two factors form the basis of the air cargo company market pricing. The success of aeronautical engineering requires several materials in its programming. As opposed to the past where the products were not of the standard the pre sent day aeronautical engineering requires enough materials. These include the use of digital and print equipment. The current data aeronautical companies utilize the geospatial machines which can decode the geospatial-referenced digits, and data which has been fused with other information.Reference:Kress, G. Civil War And Its Consequences - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 5 Words: 1461 Downloads: 7 Date added: 2019/05/18 Category History Essay Level High school Tags: Civil War Essay War Essay Did you like this example? The civil war was one of the biggest events our nation edured. Four years of gruesome battle over freedom and equality. It changed our nation and it changed us. The war itself started in 1861 on April 12th. However the issues of the civil war started long before that. The consequences would last centuries. In 1619 servants were purchased from a dutch ship. Soon they would become slaves to their masters. From that point on, one by one the colonies began to legalize slavery. They began to recognize a ?need for slaves to prosper in life. In 1688 Quakers, a big religious group at the time, began to protest the inappropriateness of slavery. They argued it was improper of christian people to own slaves and to give them unfair treatment. In 1739 the first violent rebellion of slaves happened in South Carolina. By this time many slaves had already began to run away to territories where they would be considered free and not property. By july of 1776 the colonies had declared their independence from great britain. The founding fathers of america create the Declaration of independence that states all men are created equal. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Civil War And Its Consequences" essay for you Create order However, the statement doesnt seem entirely true as the writers are slave owners and slavery and discrimination is still present. A year later the colony Vermont is the first to stop slavery in the area. Then in 1780 Pennsylvania would become the first state to slowly abolish slavery. 1783 marks the year african americans are allowed to vote in Massachusetts. Although it wouldnt be till 1870, almost a century later, that all african americans would be given the right to vote. Slaves were still running for their freedom but in 1793 the Fugitive Slave Act was passed by congress. Allowing runaway slaves to be arrested or returned to their previous slave owners. This was not a working system because many people could lie about a man stating he was previously a slave even if he was not owned by them. In addition to the return of previous slaves, people who helped slaves run away or helped in the protection of them, paid fines up to $500 dollars. Slaves still continue to run away and start rebellions that are violent and big. Later the underground railroad would form. A system to help slaves escape to north for freedom. Congress then, in 1807, bans the importation of new slaves to the american states, territories and colonies. The missouri compromise of 1821 would then divide the slave states from the free states. States then continue to abolish slavery while others decide to legalize it. Abolitionist begin to write about bringing an end to slavery causing the murder of some. States are added to the nation as more and more slaves run for freedom. Hundreds of slaves escape with the help of the underground railroad and previous slaves. Harriet Tubman being a well known slave today, returned multiple times to aid those in search of freedom. Then in 1857 Dred Scott, a former slave, goes to court to fight for his freedom along with his families. The court then states blacks are not citizens. Then in 1860 Abraham Lincoln is elected president; he believes the states cannot be separated. The war begins in 1861 with the attack on Fort Sumter. The Southern states become known as the confederate states of america while the North become known as the union states. States also begin to leave the union and join the confederacy. The union having 21 states and the confederacy having 11. In july of 1861 the union loses the battle at Bull Run. In 1862 they battle in shiloh resulting in gains and losses for both sides. Then in August of 1862 they have a second battle at Bull Run. 55,000 confederates, and 75,000 union soldiers. It becomes one more loss for the union soldiers. Then comes the battle at Antietam, which becomes known as ?the bloodiest day in U.S. military history with a loss of 26,000 men(The U.S. Civil War 1861-1865, para. 28). However, the same can be said about the Battle of Gettysburg. Which is one of the most well known battles in our Nations history.Next comes another loss for the confederates with the battle at Fredericksburg. Congress then, in 1863, calls for a draft of men ages 20 to 45. However, men who pay $300 dollars will not be subjected to going or if they provide a replacement for their spot. The lower class people complain about this, saying their lives are as important as those of the wealthy. 17,000 union soldiers and 13,000 confederates are then later killed in Chancellorsville.y Yet another win for the union at the battle of Gettysburg as the confederates surrender as once again they begin to lose the battle and the war. Riots and mobs soon begin to break out in protest in the drafting of the young boys and men. Eventually leading to the deaths of men, women, and children. Not to forget the innocent black men and women who were being killed by white men and women. Finally the confederate soldiers snag another win with the battle at Chickamauga, again in 1863. Later that year President Abraham Lincoln would give a two minute speech that would come to be known as the Gettysburg Address. In honor of those men who had fallen in battle. The Confederates then take one last win win the battle at Cold Harbor. As the union leader General Grant makes costly mistakes. Weeks past as the final battles of the war happen. Two years later on January 31, the united states write the 13th Amendment and congress ratified the thirteenth amendment and wait for it to come into play. As the war draws to an end more and more battles are fought as thousands of soldiers lives are lost. The fight for the end of slavery is gruesome. With the loss of president Abraham Lincoln in 1865 by assassination by John Wilkes Booth. Andrew Jackson then takes over as president for the remainder of the war and so forth. In May of 1865 the confederates finally surrender with the death of more than 620,000 americans most from disease and illness. As the war ends a parade is held to celebrate the closing of the war. On December 6, 1865 the United States adds the thirteenth amendment. Finally abolishing slavery once and for all. With war finally over it seems as though all will be good. In spite of that, more trouble lies ahead. The battle for equality has just begun. Blacks will still receive unfair treatment and discrimination. Blacks will continue to fight for their equality for many more centuries to come. Segregated from the whites, blacks stay as the lowest race. With whites being the most superior. Now starts the civil rights movement. Where more lives will be lost and more battle fought. Some violent and others peaceful. The civil war will forever be one of the greatest wars in our american history. The only time in our history where our nation was divided and battled against each other. It was definitely an event that we do not want to repeat. It shaped us and provided a stepping stone into another significant time period in american history, The Civil Rights Movement. Today the Civil War helps us understand the importance of equality. Helping even with the equality and rights of women. It will forever be a major, and highly influential event in history. I chose the civil war because it has always been the war that fascinated me the most. I always found it interesting that people i see everyday would have been treated differently if it wasnt for that war. Its crazy to think about how colored people were treated so different even though we are all the same. No race being better than another. Additionally it sad to think that the issues of discrimination and unequal rights still exist today. People of a different race face unfair treatment and inequality throughout the nation today although it is minor compared to the history of discrimination. It seems as though it will always be an issues and it will always be something we have to work towards fixing. This project for me, was fun and interesting. I learned so much more than i would have expected. I currently already knew a decent amount of information on this topic and writing this helped me understand why its so important for us to learn about our history. Today we have Museums and Monuments that serve as a reminder of the shocking, and horrid yet much needed battle. We remember all those who fought and those who still fight for a better future and life. One filled with freedom and equality for all races. Why Are Stepfamilies Considered to Be Complex...
Approximately forty-five percent of all people in the United States will marry divorce and remarry. Because of this statistic and the rising rates of divorce this is also making the number of step families to rise in the country. Remarrying can be very difficult most of the time and this may make your step family a complex institution. A complex institution is an institution that affects people in more than one way. For example, it may cause physical and mental issues and stress. On the outside we may see a very happy couple who has just been remarried from a divorce, but on the inside it may be a completely different story. One thing many people do not consider before getting remarried is the affect that it has on the people around themâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦But, now all of the attention and what not has to be divided among the children and this may be very hard on some kids. Not only is it mentally and physically difficult for their children but it may be for the parents as well. I know this from personal experiences. My situation does not yet contain a step family but it is similar to their problems. I have not been with my sons father since he was born and we are both seeing other people. It has been a struggle for his father and I both to think that he may have other mother or father figures in his life. Jealousy is often a major part in this problem because no parent wants their child to replace them with someone else. I have our son most of the time and my boyfriend spends a lot of time around him. My sons father often thinks that he will be replaced or forgotten because of this. I constantly see mothers trying to replace their childs father with new ââ¬Å"daddysâ⬠for money purposes or out of spite. I think that this is wrong on so many levels. If your children have a good father who treats them well they should never be replaced by someone else. A father is a father and it should always be the childs decision to let someone come into thei r life and accept them as a father or mother figure. A parent should never force their children to do that. This isShow MoreRelatedCjus 230 Final Paper4022 Words à |à 17 Pages(Elrod amp; Ryder, 1999, p. 53).
